Much to the dismay of the guys and Violet, I went home immediately after the incident with Mike. That they’d even consider not opening this weekend just kills me—it would have been all my fault. I hope they’d understood that I meant it. We’re opening. I’ve just got to finish my job. I’m not letting Mike—the bastard—put a halt to things. That would be letting him win, and I’m not having it.

As much as I wanted to stick around and make a plan to make sure we are ready for the opening, I’d been completely discombobulated. I don’t think I would have been much good to anyone in the state I was in. Now, pacing around my apartment, I think maybe I should have just stayed and let them distract me.

The bottom line is I was embarrassed. Thirty-year-old me knows nothing that happened today was my fault, but seeing Mike again sent me back, slamming me into the deep recesses of my mind where I store the memories of what he had tried to do to me in college—when I’d thought he was my friend. Just thinking about it makes me break out in a cold sweat.

The sound of my phone vibrating on the coffee table where I had tossed it earlier captures my attention. Picking it up, I swipe to open the text messages that have just come in.

Unknown Number: Hey, pretty girl. It’s Josh.

Unknown Number: I hope it’s okay that I got your phone number from your records here.

Unknown Number: Kind of naughty of me, I know…
